The truth is, on the internet not everything is safe, and most of the biggest companies sell our data without asking us.

As reported by 404media, the parent company of Tumblr and WordPress, Automattic, is striking a deal to sell user data to train artificial intelligence (AI) models of MidJourney and OpenAI.

Why do AI Companies Need this data?

AI companies like OpenAI and MidJourney need large data to train their models. The AI model can’t learn anything on its own. AI models learn from us. Models use our data to learn. From WordPress, AI models get your data, especially the blog post information or data. Your website and millions of other websites are very valuable for AI companies. That’s why they try to make a deal with the biggest companies like WordPress to get the data for training their AI models. For that, WordPress definitely will get a huge amount of money just like Google did with Reddit for content licensing.

AI companies do not train their models from just one or two websites. They train their models from a lot of website data. So, basically, our ideas, posts, and information are the key to AI models.

Not All WordPress Websites

There are two WordPress versions. One is WordPress.com, similar to Wix.com and Shopify. Another one is WordPress.org, which is open-source and self-hosted. In WordPress.org, you need to download the WordPress CMS application or install it on your hosting server. Most of the WordPress websites are WordPress.org. And they are safe.

10 differences between wordpress.org and WordPress.com

Automattic specifies that only WordPress.com websites are affected by this data-scraping. In WordPress.com, websites use an Automattic hosting server. So, the data scraping is just for WordPress.com, not WordPress.org.

But on your WordPress.org websites, if you use Automattic plugins like Jetpack and Akismet, then there is a chance of data scraping, so avoid these plugins if you want to keep your WordPress website safe.

What should we do for WordPress.com websites?

If you are using WordPress.com, there is an option to opt out of the data scraping option. Login to your WordPress.com account and go to Settings – General – Privacy and click on the option for preventing ‘third-party sharing.’

So, if your website is on WordPress.org, then you don’t need to worry about data scraping right now, but you should not use Automattic plugins like Akismet and Jetpack because there is a chance for data scraping. If you are using WordPress.com, then you should stop the data sharing option from the privacy setting.

On the internet, everything is becoming unsafe; and we need to be careful about our information and also our website information. Be safe and enjoy your life. Thank you.
